Birmingham’s position as a leading international events destination has been acknowledged at the Meetings Industry Marketing Awards (MIMA) in London.
Birmingham Convention Bureau (BCB), operated by Marketing Birmingham, picked up the Gold Award for Best Print AdvertisingCampaign, beating Norway and Jersey and recognising a 12 month campaign designed to position the city as a leading global events destination.
The campaign features a series of paper chain men holding hands, with imagery of iconic
Birmingham landmarks, and uses concise lines including ‘making events extraordinary’ and ‘the place that holds it all together’. The concept represents the fact that Birmingham is connected, youthful and international.
The campaign has led to high brand recognition for BCB, demonstrated through research
conducted at exhibitions including Confex and the National Venue Show which recorded a 42% recognition and awareness of the campaign. There has also been an increase in the number of people viewing Birmingham as a great place to do business to 52% in a survey conducted in January this year by Marketing Birmingham.
Ian Taylor, Commercial Director of Marketing Birmingham said: “Birmingham is an international events city and through working closely with partners in the city and wider region including Advantage West Midlands, BCB has become one of the biggest convention bureau’s in the UK. We therefore needed a strong brand identity and advertising in order to sustain and grow this position and so we are delighted to have won this award as a measure of our success.
“2007 has been a very successful year for Birmingham, securing a high profile events to come to the city including the Conservative Party Conference in 2008 and 2010 and the 100th Rotary International Convention in 2009.
“We will continue to build on this and are in discussions with a number of organisations to bring more high profile events to Birmingham in the near future.”
The campaign creative was designed by Sutton Coldfield based advertising agency WAA.
