Bollywood Dances into Birmingham for Town Hall 175th Anniversary

Town Hall Birmingham will be the setting for a British Bollywood outdoor dance spectacular this October - the centrepiece of the Grade I listed concert hall’s 175th anniversary celebrations.

Bollywood Steps, presented by Town Hall in association with  leading UK outdoor arts specialists nutkhut, is set to capture the imagination of up to 12,000 people in three performances in Victoria Square on Friday 9 and Saturday 10 October. Admission is free.

Developed as part of People Dancing, Bollywood Steps is the first major West Midlands project to be awarded an Inspire Mark - recognising the project as part of the official London 2012 Cultural Olympiad, the national celebration of culture inspired by the Olympic and Paralympic Games coming to the UK.

Bollywood Steps is a breathtaking and iconic show inspired by Bollywood film, featuring a professional cast and hundreds of schoolchildren, over 140 costume changes, stunning architectural lighting of Town Hall, pyrotechnics and water effects.

There is an open invitation to the audience to take part in a short mass participation sequence for a magnificent flower-strewn wedding scene - members of the public will have the chance to learn the moves in a number of events at Town Hall Birmingham between now and October. Bollywood Steps was created and choreographed by Simmy Gupta, the co-artistic director of London-based creative organisation nutkhut.

Gupta, who grew up and trained as a dancer in Birmingham will marry influential dance forms such as salsa, kathak, classical, hip-hop, Bhangra and folk with the elaborate production values of a Busby Berkeley style Hollywood musical for the unique event.

The People Dancing programme is funded by Legacy Trust UK, Arts Council England and Advantage West Midlands. People Dancing is a three year programme which is part of the West Midland’s Culture Programme for London 2012 that uses the inspiration of the Olympic and Paralympic Games to get as many people as possible dancing across the West Midlands.
