International Judo is Back in Birmingham
The GB Judo World Cup returns to Birmingham’s NIA for the third consecutive year on Saturday 20 September.
Women’s judo players from thirteen countries will take part in the event. Japan, USA, and New Zealand are amongst the countries sending competitors, some having recently taken part in the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
The GB Judo World Cup is one of the first major judo tournaments following the Beijing Olympic Games so will see the competitors taking their first steps on the road to the London 2012 Olympic Games.
With this in mind some of the future stars of British judo will be taking part alongside more senior members of the team to gain valuable experience of competing in a major international event on home soil.
The British team which includes Junior World silver medallist Sally Conway, and Commonwealth Games gold medallists Simone Callender, and Samantha Lowe, also includes Birmingham’s Hardy Spicer Judo Club’s Rebecca Dunning.
The GB Judo World Cup is supported by Birmingham City Council and Councillor Ray Hassall, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Sport and Culture said: “I am delighted to welcome back the GB Judo World Cup for the third consecutive year. We are now at the start of the London 2012 Olympiad so this is a great opportunity for the British team to get experience of competing on home soil and as this event is a real festival of judo it will also be an opportunity to see some of the world’s best judo players compete.”
Densign White, Chairman of the British Judo Association said, “I am delighted to be back in Birmingham for the third year hosting this fantastic event. We expect the standard of judo will be as exciting as it is in the past. As we begin our build up to London 2012 this is a wonderful opportunity for younger judoka to start to establish themselves on the International stage. And for those from the UK they have the added advantage of home support”.
The players will compete in seven different weight categories and all finals will be held on Saturday, with the competition starting at 11am.
The GB Judo World Cup is organised by British Judo and supported by Birmingham City Council and funded by the National Lottery through UK Sport’s World Class Events Programme. Other event partners included BBC WM, Fighting Films, Sport England and Renault.
