Busiest Month Ever at Birmingham International Airport

Birmingham International Airport is celebrating a slice of history, after August saw the highest number of passengers ever pass through the Airport in a single month, surpassing the previous best set in August 2005.

The region’s gateway to the world handled 1,079,970 passengers during August, the busiest month to date, since opening back in 1939. During the month, 741,445 scheduled passengers and 338,525 charter travellers used the Airport’s two terminals, an increase of 7.4% over the previous year and 30,000 more than the same month three years ago.

This milestone comes on the back of a busiest-ever July, which also resulted in the million passenger mark being achieved and the Airport is now well on course for a record year.

Joe Kelly, Acting Managing Director of Birmingham International Airport, said, “The records continue to be broken here at the Airport, following in the path of February, March, April, May and July, which were all record-breaking months. For us to be able to celebrate our busiest ever month is a great achievement and something that we are all very proud of.”

“With many exciting additions to the route network in the coming months, including the launch of Turkish Airlines’ service to Istanbul in December and a number of new Ryanair services, among them the recently announced ski routes to Cuneo and Grenoble, a record year is well within sight.”

In August, growth was achieved on Non EU routes of 2.4% and EU of 24.3%. The Irish Republic saw an increase of 20.4%.
