Speckled Monster Comes To Life

This September, families have the chance to experience the gruesome reality of smallpox with a brand new show ‘The Speckled Monster’. Thinktank Birmingham science museum has teamed up with the Birmingham Repertory Theatre and the University of Birmingham Medical School to present this innovative interactive theatre performance to young people and families.

Visitors will see the emotive subject of smallpox brought to life through an enthralling drama by Birmingham Repertory Theatre Company. Both entertaining and highly educational, the interactive performance will explore personal stories of smallpox, while celebrating the scientists and doctors who achieved remarkable breakthroughs to prevent the spread of the disease.  The drama has been written by Jenny Stephens and will be directed by Tim Ford.

“The Speckled Monster is a new and exciting way of bringing Science and History to life for visitors,” explains Julia Kingston, Head of Learning at Thinktank, “This is a new collaboration for us with The REP and University of Birmingham, and we hope it’s going to be both interesting and inspirational to all of our visitors”.

The Speckled Monster stalked the world for over five thousand years; it killed ruthlessly and indiscriminately, cutting down entire communities.  It massacred kings and peasants, adults and children alike - it killed around three hundred million people in the twentieth century alone. The Speckled Monster, better known as smallpox, is the only disease to have been eradicated from the world through human effort.

‘The Speckled Monster’ is a 50 minute drama, taking place at 12 noon and 3.00pm on Saturday 13, 20, 27 September and 4 October 2008.
