Sharing a Vision
Mike Whitby, Leader of Birmingham City Council (second left) joined Gallan Group directors (left to right) Marty Gallagher, Jackie Gallagher and Phil Grant for a bird’s eye view of ‘new’ Birmingham.
From the roof of their offices in St George House, Hill Street, Gallan highlighted features of their £45million mixed-use scheme in Upper Dean Street adjacent to the Bullring shopping centre - a key regeneration area featured in Birmingham’s ‘Big City Plan’.
They also outlined plans for the potential redevelopment of the St George House site as a major mixed-use development with hotels, serviced apartments, offices, retail and leisure facilities and integral to Birmingham’s multi-million pound investment in the New Street ‘Gateway Project’ just minutes walking distance away.
“We recognised the potential of this strategic site more than five years ago” said Jackie Gallagher, Chairman of the entrepreneurial family business.
“Our long term vision was to redevelop it and attract investment from international hotel brands.
“Birmingham City Council’s Gateway Project has acted as a catalyst to the success of this initiative and we are more than delighted with the levels of interest from major hotel players in the industry.”
Councillor Whitby said: “I am delighted that Birmingham continues to inspire developers, and that interest remains strong despite the vicissitudes of the world economy.
“The ‘new’ New Street Station, once complete, will be transformational and lever in billions of pound of additional private sector investment and opportunity. It is an excellent example of Birmingham positioning itself for the future, with strategic joint-investment from the public and private sector.”
Last month Gallan Group secured funding from Standard Life Investments on behalf of their client South Yorkshire Pensions Authority to build a £13million 210 bed Travelodge in Upper Dean Street and have planning for a 340 bed three-star plus Maldron Conference hotel, 18,000sq ft of retail units, restaurants and bars and 10,000sq ft of offices on the site.
Ninety percent of the whole scheme has been pre-let and up to 1,000 jobs are expected to result from the development.
Gallan now have three major hotel projects in their expanding property portfolio having secured the opportunity to develop a 60 bed Travelodge on their prestigious £20 million Gallan Park mixed-use scheme in Cannock in January 2010.
