£28 Million Revamp of The NEC Arena Moves a Step Closer
A £28million revamp of Birmingham’s NEC Arena has moved a step closer after planning permission was approved by the local authority.
Planning officials from Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council this week granted full approval to The NEC Group to redevelop the iconic venue and create brand new seats, toilets, restaurants and a VIP Party Deck.
It follows an announcement last month that the arena is to have a new look and name through a £28 million funding package that includes a major sponsorship deal with global electronic giants LG.
The agenda setting concert and events venue, which welcomes one million visitors every year, will become the LG Arena from September 1.
Birmingham City Council has provided a £25 million loan which will be serviced and repaid by improved financial performance from The NEC Arena. An application for a grant of the £3 million balance is still being considered by development agency Advantage West Midlands.
Work will now begin in just a few weeks on creating brand new facilities after councillors gave the plans the green light on Wednesday (Aug 13).
Phil Mead, Managing Director, The NEC Group Arenas, said: “It’s great news that Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council has granted us planning permission for this exciting redevelopment of our world class venue.”
“We are pleased to announce that work will now start on start creating brand new seating, hospitality, bars, restaurants and other essential customer facilities which will create an outstanding customer experience at the LG Arena.”
“As part of the redevelopment, our capacity will be increased by around 2,000, further enhancing Birmingham’s appeal for major artists, and the flexible seating and draping systems will provide more intimate theatre style configurations.”
“The arena is already one of the region’s biggest attractions and these plans, together with the LG partnership will continue its legacy for future generations.
The redevelopment of the venue, which has helped boost the reputation and the economy of the region since it opened its doors 28 years ago, will ensure that Birmingham stays firmly on the map as a must stop city on major UK and international tours during a buoyant live touring market, and will provide visitors with a 21st century total entertainment experience.
