New Designer Wins Art Prize
The future’s looking bright for UCE Birmingham student, Sian Hughes, after scooping a prize at the country’s foremost event in graduate design.
The annual New Designers exhibition was held at the Business Design Centre in London earlier this month. This prestigious event for the best of new British design talent attracted over 1700 design visitors and showcased the work, energy and talent of more than 400 young designers. The New Des igners Awards are recognised as a key barometer of design talent and the exhibition often launches the careers of future designers.
21-year-old Sian, who has completed the BA (Hons) Jewellery and Silversmithing degree , scooped the Contemporary Applied Arts (CAA) Award and was presented with her award by Chancellor Gordon Brown. Her award offers her free membership of the CAA for a year and an opportunity to showcase her work at an exhibition at their central London venue.
Terry Hunt, Deputy Head of UCE Birmingham’s School of Jewellery, said: “ Sian’s award win represents a wonderful boost for her at the start of her professional career and is also a reassuring recognition of her course and tutors’ efforts.”
In addition to the award, Sian along with most of the other UCE Birmingham exhibitors, secured many commissions and invitations to exhibit elsewhere, further reinforcing the benefit of this event to design students upon graduation.
