Seb Coe Backs Birmingham Event

Sebastian Coe, the man who helped to secure the Olympics for London, has urged the people of Birmingham to support the European Athletics Indoor Championships, an event which is being staged at the city’s very own National Indoor Arena from 2-4 March 2007.

Seb Coe acknowledged that the European Athletics Indoor Championships will be an important stepping stone to 2012 and said: “For many young athletes the road to London 2012 will start in Birmingham next year at the European Indoor Championships and I will be watching in keen anticipation for potential 2012 Olympians.”

Seb Coe also praised Birmingham’s past record of staging major athletics event by saying: “The World Indoor Championships in Athletics held in Birmingham 2003 are still held up as a blueprint for major sports events around the world and I have every confidence that the Europeans in 2007 will be equally successful.”

His comments came during the first day of the European Athletics Championships in Gothenburg, the outdoor version of the event that Birmingham will stage in March and whilst Europe’s best athletes are fighting it out for gold, silver and bronze in Sweden, Birmingham’s organising committee are working hard to prepare for next March.

The organising team are delighted with how preparations are going, with a brand new track secured and already under construction, improved facilities for the world’s media guaranteed and nearly 50% of tickets already sold.

In fact the European Athletics Indoor Championships’ organising committee is expecting ticket sales to take off following the Gothenburg event, with an audience of millions watching live coverage on the BBC, so local people who want to be there in March are being urged to snap up tickets now so that they don’t miss out on this athletics extravaganza happening on their doorstep.

The Championships is a European Athletic Association event and will be jointly organised by Birmingham City Council and UK Athletics. It will be part funded by UK Sport’s National Lottery-funded World Class Events Programme.
