Oriental Fine Dining Comes to Birmingham

ShanghaiYe, the stunning and stylish new Birmingham restaurant is set to transform the Midlands’ Oriental fine dining scene. The chic venue brings modern Shanghai cuisine to the city, offering discerning diners new-found authenticity. Located in Holloway Head, just outside Birmingham’s Chinese Quarter, ShanghaiYe’s inspired menu includes many time-honoured favourites such as Shanghai Sweet and Sour Pork. But it is its speciality Dim Sum, the steamed-to-perfection dumplings, that sets this unique restaurant apart. Original dishes such as Siew Long Bun - steamed pork or chicken dumplings - or Dim Sum Basket, a selection of prawn, scallop, pork and vegetable dumplings, head an eclectic and modernist menu that aims to intrigue and delight lovers of authentic Chinese cuisine.

With its minimalist yet intimate décor, favouring gently focused lighting and dark wood tones, ShanghaiYe’s award-winning chefs place an emphasis on braised, roasted, steamed and quick fried dishes. “Our chefs recreate the celebrated dishes of Shanghai, a cosmopolitan city which historically embraced western culture through its trading past,” said Kay Ooi, manager of ShanghaiYe. “In bringing this cuisine to Birmingham, we are meeting the needs of diners who demand more than traditional Chinese food.” He added: “Our clientele are aspirational people who are looking to experience something different. Until now that’s meant a visit to China - with ShanghaiYe, authenticity is on their doorstep.”

The enticing a la carte menu features delights such as Crispy Scallion Cake, King Prawn with Long Jing Green Tea and Tea Smoked Duck. Interesting accompaniments include Hand Pulled Noodles and Emperor Rice, a royal dish incorporating shark’s fin, prawn and scallop, all topped with Tobiko caviar. The well-balanced wine list is supported by a selection of enigmatically-named cocktails with the likes of the timeless Margarita and Mojito, complemented by ShanghaiYe’s newer creations, including ‘PS I love you’.
