Bangla Mela 2006 postponed

An event this weekend – the Bangla Mela 2006 - has been postponed on the advice of Birmingham City Council and West Midlands Police.

Now people who were planning to attend are being advised it will not be taking place and not to make a wasted journey. It had been scheduled to take place this Sunday July 30 at Mansfield Park in Aston, Birmingham. Organisers have now agreed to postpone it after safety concerns were raised by the council’s licensing section and police.

Pete Barrow, head of licensing at Birmingham City Council, said: “We are keen to assist the organisers and hopefully the event can take place later this year. However in the interests of public safety we had to advise the event on Sunday should not take place. It seems the Mela was likely to attract far more people than had originally been expected. The park is limited in size and this could have caused problems.”

Acting Chief Inspector Richard Youds of West Midlands Police said: “This is the first time that the Bangla Mela had been planned. Because it appeared it was going to be extremely popular, concerns were raised about Mansfield Park accommodating all the people who intended to visit. We and the event organisers want this to be a safe and enjoyable occasion for families and a larger venue is now being sought so that the Mela can be held later this year.”
