BIA Becomes Smoke Free
Birmingham International Airport (BIA) is reacting to the forthcoming legislation to ban smoking in public places by making all passenger terminals and associated office buildings smoke-free zones.
Mindful of the associated health risks that second-hand smoke creates, the Airport Company is implementing a smoke-free to protect its employees, customers and premises and to provide a safe, healthy and smoke-free environment.
The smoking ban will start at one minute past midnight on the 30th September; however a reduction in smoking areas will be implemented from the 1st July 2006 including some airside restaurants (after passport/security control). For those wishing to smoke, there will be designated covered areas provided on both Terminal frontages. External smoking shelters will also be made available for staff.
Richard Heard, Managing Director of BIA commenting on the smoking ban said: “We have a commitment to protect our staff as well as the millions of passengers that visit the Airport each year. Given the research and evidence about second-hand smoke, we feel this is the right way forward to provide a better environment for all.”
Appropriate signage will be displayed throughout the Airport to ensure smokers have a clear understanding of BIA’s policy.
