‘On Yer Bike’ as Cycle Days Return

Birmingham families are being urged to ‘get on their bikes’ this summer after Birmingham City Council extended the popular Family Cycle Day programme.

Following the success of last year’s hugely successful event, organisers have earmarked five locations for 2009:

•    Saturday 13 June – Cannon Hill Park
•    Sunday 14 June – Sutton Park
•    Saturday 20 June – Hodge Hill
•    Sunday 21 June – Witton Lakes
•    Sunday 5 July – Handsworth Park

Introduced to encourage increased sports participation for residents of all ages, the free Family Cycle Days also promote cycling opportunities across the city.

Participants can take part in escorted 2km, 5km or 10km cycle rides around some of Birmingham’s most picturesque parks.

This year’s events will also include a cycling stunt show, while people of all ages will have the opportunity to try out a selection of weird and wonderful bikes.

Councillor Martin Mullaney, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Sports and Culture said: "Back by popular demand the Family Cycle Days are a fantastic opportunity for the residents of Birmingham to improve their health and fitness and have a great day out for free. These events really demonstrate that leisure can be fun, educational and get you fit.

"Birmingham is one of the greenest cities in the country and there could be no better way to appreciate the parkland and wildlife than having a leisurely cycle with friends and family."

Representatives from West Midlands Police will be on hand to offer advice on securing bikes, while the Birmingham City Council Transportation team will provide information on the huge number of cycle routes across the city.

There will also be practical bike maintenance sessions.

Even if you don’t have a bike of your own you can still take part in the escorted rides. Bikes for cyclists of all ages will be available for free hire – participants will be required to provide some form of identification.

Each Family Cycle Day will start at 10am and finish at 4pm.
