Silver turns to Gold for Simon Halsey and CBSO

In a Special programme to celebrate his 25 years as Chorus Director to the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Simon Halsey will conduct a superb pair of English works at Symphony Hall, Birmingham on 21 June 2008.

The CBSO will be joined by the City of Birmingham Symphony Chorus and the City of Birmingham Youth Chorus to perform Holst’s Savitri, and Vaughan Williams’  A Sea Symphony. 2008 is the 50th anniversary of Vaughan Williams death, and Holst composed Savitri 100 years ago.

Joining Simon on stage will be soprano Janice Watson, mezzo-soprano Sarah Connolly, tenor James Oxley and baritone James Rutherford.
Under Simon’s leadership the choruses have embarked on many concerts spanning the globe, creating a reputation second to none.  Locally they have often sung with the CBSO at Symphony Hall but have also built relationships with orchestras and in festivals in Vienna, Salzburg, Leipzig and the BBC Proms.

Having worked with many thousands of chorus members since 1983, Simon is astounded and in awe of the continuing commitment and devotion that members have shown.
‘All chorus members have shown a real commitment to performing together on stage over the past 25 years.   It’s been amazing to see how the chorus has grown and progressed.  Many members have passed the baton, so to speak, to their children, creating a personal sense of ownership and family feel.  In fact, my own children are involved and singing on Saturday.”
