Birmingham Achieves Award For Best Airport
Birmingham International Airport (BIA) has won the Airports Council International (ACI) Award for the Best Airport in Europe in the category of 5-10 million passengers. ACI is the only worldwide professional association of airport operators, of which BIA is a member.
Although the Airport achieved the award for its overall excellence, the judges made particular reference to Birmingham Airport’s entry with regards to its active community and environment work, saying it is a ‘classic example of an airport that has made outstanding efforts to actively sustain relationships with the local community and gain support for the airport expansion while minimising its environmental impacts’.
All airport applications were judged on excellence in the following areas: Retail, Security, Operations, Facilities, Community Relations, Environmental Awareness, Customer Service – passengers and Customer Services – airlines.
The award was presented to the Airport at the ACI’s closing event of the 17th ACI European Annual Congress. The judging panel was drawn from a well respected group of experts including the European Disability Forum, Swiss International Airlines, Star Alliance Services, Hartfield-Jackson Atlantic International and UBS.
Joe Kelly, the Airport’s Acting Managing Director said: “To have won this accolade by ACI Europe is a fantastic achievement as it recognises the investments that we have made to position Birmingham Airport at the same level as leading European airports.
“The success of the Airport is built on the hundred plus companies which operate on site 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The hard work and dedication of all our partners has enabled Birmingham Airport to win this award.
“We are particularly pleased that special recognition was given to our environmental and community programmes, which are in place to mitigate our operational impacts on the environment and local people, and provide positive improvements for our neighbours.”
Over the last few years, Birmingham Airport has also won the Business Travel World Magazine Award five times, the OAG Airport Marketing Award twice, the Chartered Institute of Public Relations award for PR and lobbying activities and the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation ‘Clean Air Silver Award’ for making its building smoke free before the Government ban on July 1 2007.
