Raisins galore for prize winning bakery student
Bakery student, Tara Gearing from Birmingham College of Food and Tourism is all smiles after winning a top industry award and a study trip to the States.
At a recent national bakery conference, California Raisins awarded Tara the first ever Student Merit Award, given for outstanding involvement in the bakery industry.
Tara, 20, is currently completing her NVQ3 in pastry and is staying on at College to start a Degree in Culinary Arts in September. She has already won several prizes and accolades including becoming the 7th woman in 500 years to become an incorporated baker of Glasgow, giving her freedom of that city.
As part of the California Raisins prize, in September Tara will fly out to spend an all expenses paid week at a raisin plant in Fresno, California and will visit a US bakery college.
Dawn Gemmell, Head of Bakery at Birmingham College of Food said: “The Merit Award is designed for those who show enthusiasm, originality and commitment and Tara has all of those qualities. She is a fantastic student and her motivation inspires others around her. She has a great career ahead of her."
Tara is now on a placement exchange in France. In the future she wants to own her own business.
