M6 Roadworks

Birmingham will be open for business as usual during the major road works taking place on the M6 and around Birmingham between the end of June and December 2006. Please use the information below to help you plan your journey.

Until January 2007 there will be speed limits, contraflows, and slip road closures on the M6 Southbound between Junctions 6 & 5 near Spaghetti Junction, and Northbound between Junctions 8 and 9 near Walsall; this is whilst essential repairs to deal with recurring potholes takes place. Knock-on delays are also expected on the A38(M) Aston Expressway.

Road closures

There will be no access from the M6 northbound onto the A38(M) Aston Expressway/Salford Circus from early July until early December 2006. Traffic will be diverted via junction 5 and the Tyburn Road/Spine Road or Junction 7, A34 - Walsall Road.

There will be no access from the A38(M) Aston Expressway out of Birmingham or from Salford Circus onto the M6 southbound from early July until early September 2006.
At Junction 9, A461, Walsall, the slip road onto the M6 southbound will be closed for approximately 14 months from late June to allow strengthening work on the M5/M6 link at junction 8.

Resurfacing

There are two phases of resurfacing work being undertaken:

From early July until the end of October 2006 on the M6 northbound between Junction 8, M5 and Junction 9, A461, Walsall. There will be a contraflow system in place on the southbound carriageway with two lanes in each direction.

From 3rd July until early December 2006 M6 southbound between Junction 6 (Spaghetti Junction) and Junction 5 on the southbound carriageway. There will be a contraflow system in place on the northbound carriageway with two lanes in each direction.

As a result the major routes in and around Birmingham (especially A45 Coventry Road, A47 Heartlands Spine Road, A38 Tyburn Road and A34 Walsall Road) are likely to be busier than usual.
