Sign Up to Become a Bike Week Biker!

Bike Week is coming soon and Birmingham City Council is organising a number of events to get you in the cycling mood, so it’s time to get your bike from the shed, give it a dust down and put on your cycling glad rags for Birmingham Bike Week 2006.

Councillor Len Gregory, Cabinet Member for Transportation & Street Services said:

“This year the City Council wants to see more people cycling, particularly during Bike Week 2006, so we are launching the Birmingham Bike2Work challenge. You can accept the challenge by registering on the website www.birmingham.gov.uk/bike2work or by getting a log card from Libraries, Leisure Centres and Bike shops.

“Support is in place for all entrants - from getting a free bike MOT from a range of participating bike shops, planning your cycle route using the new Birmingham Cycling and Walking map, or receiving advice from Birmingham City Cycling Officers.

"I am sure that the Challenge will prove a popular event, especially as there will also be a prize draw of a Raleigh bike, kindly donated by Jackson Hateley Cycles, Wolverhampton. There are many benefits to cycling both in terms of helping to reduce congestion and pollution of the environment, but also the health benefits that increased exercise brings.”

For those people who would rather cycle for leisure, the City Council has organised a “Ride the Rea” family cycle ride. This is a planned self-led cycle ride on Sunday 25th June, from Cannon Hill Park along the Rea Valley Route. This event begins at 10am, and promises to be a great family day out for all of the family.

There are a wide range of other events happening during Bike Week/Bike2Work in Birmingham and for more information on, or photo opportunities for any of these events, please contact the Birmingham City Council, Sustainable Travel team on 0121 303 7485/7249.
