Sea Life Centre Welcomes The Real Nemo!

A clownfish that could lay claim to being the real Nemo is settling into a display tank at Birmingham’s National Sea Life Centre.

Not only is the new arrival every bit as cute as the Pixar cartoon character who captured the hearts of a whole generation of young film goers…he even has the same deformity!

Staff at a sister Sea Life attraction in Hunstanton found him among a small shoal of clownfish in one of their tropical tanks.

“Viewed from the side he looks just like most other clownfish,” said 19-year-old aquarist Kirsty Sopp.

“When he turns to look back at you though you can clearly see he has one fin much smaller than the other, just like Nemo.”

Word of the discovery soon spread through the Sea Life centre network, and was greeted with particular excitement by the Birmingham team, who already had a clownfish on display that they had christened Marlin…after the screen Nemo’s dad.

“As soon as we heard we knew we had to unite the real Nemo with our Marlin,” said Birmingham Sea Life’s Lynsey Thompson.

Travel arrangements were quickly organised and the living, breathing Nemo arrived at his new home in Britain’s second city today (Thursday).

“He and Marlin seemed to strike up a friendship almost immediately,” said Lynsey. “I think they’re going to get along famously.”

Lynsey and her colleagues can hardly wait to witness the reactions of the expected influx of youngsters over the half-term holiday.

“There are generally shouts of ‘Look it’s Nemo,’ when they see a clownfish anyway,” she said. “When they see how much of a look-alike this one is I think they’re going to be really thrilled.”
