Engraving of new names on Armed Forces Memorial at the National Memorial Arboretum

6:00am, 29 April 2009: At the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire, engraver Nick Hindle this morning started adding the names of 67 servicemen and women to the Armed Forces Memorial.  Every Spring, over a period of around three weeks, the names of those who have been killed on duty or as a result of terrorism during the previous year, are engraved on the Memorial’s Portland Stone walls.

The Armed Forces Memorial, which was dedicated in 2007, carries the names of nearly 16,000 servicemen and women who have been killed since shortly after the end of the Second World War.  It is the nation’s only such memorial, with the Arboretum now attracting around 300,000 visitors a year.

On 24th April 2009, HRH Prince William became patron of an £8 million Appeal that will see the site transformed into a world-class centre for remembrance.  The Arboretum, supported by The Royal British Legion, honours the fallen, recognises sacrifice and fosters pride in the country.
