City welcomes new Lord Mayor
Labour Councillor Chauhdry Rashid will become the new Lord Mayor of Birmingham next Tuesday, 20th May at the Annual General Meeting of the City Council.
The ceremony will welcome the 67-year-old as 2008/9’s First Citizen and bid farewell to Cllr Randal Brew, the outgoing Lord Mayor, who will become Deputy Lord Mayor.
Cllr Rashid was born in Pakistan and is a proud adopted Brummie having lived here since 1963 with his wife Shafait Begum whom he has been married to for 45 years.
The couple have seven children and 11 grandchildren.
Cllr Rashid has previously worked for Dudley Council and became one of the first Asian magistrates before becoming a councillor for Small Heath between 1987 and 1999.
He then returned to the council in 2004 to represent the Nechells ward.
Although retired he still plays an active role in his community and is a governor for Regents Park Primary School and Matthew Boulton College. He is also a board member of Birmingham Family Housing Association and St Peters (Saltley) Housing Association.
The Lord Mayor Elect said: “It is an absolute honour for my wife and me to become Birmingham’s First Citizens and I have no doubt that we will both have a wonderful year in office. We are really looking forward to meeting a whole wealth of people from all different backgrounds and cultures and promoting our wonderful city to everyone we meet, both in the UK and abroad.”
