Sky's the Limit for UCE Birmingham Students
High-flying media students from UCE Birmingham have been short-listed for a prestigious Sky Television Scholarship.
The second year students studying on the BA (Hons) Media and Communication degree - Daniel Bardell, (20) Nikki Lennox (21) and James Butterworth (22) - were handpicked for an intensive work experience programme at BSkyB’s main site in West London. Based in the company’s Libraries section, they will spend two weeks in September getting a taste of the full range of Sky TV’s operations, including news, current affairs and sports broadcasting.
At the end of the placement, the student judged to have made the most impact will be awarded the Scholarship of £1500 while the others receive £200 each.
This is the first year of the scheme between Sky and UCE Birmingham’s Department of Media and Communication. The three Scholarship contenders were chosen from over 20 undergraduate and postgraduate applicants and Sky have been so impressed with the students’ overall level of enthusiasm that they have also offered two-day work placements to four runners-up.
After heading the interview panel at UCE Birmingham Senior Manager, Dave Rooke, commented: “I have many A-level students asking how they can progress with a career in television. I now know where to send them to be looked after."
Peter Wilby, Co-ordinator of the Professional Studies programme for Media and Communication, added: “The Sky Scholarship is just one indication of the excellent relationship between the University’s Media and Communication Department and mainstream media organisations across the UK. Our aim is to prepare our students for a career in a highly competitive industry. For them, experience in a professional media environment goes a long way to achieving this and we’re therefore delighted with the support and recognition that we have received from Sky.”
