The Pretenders

Rock band The Pretenders have been announced as the special guests at the Rod Stewart concert at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry.

Chrissie Hynde and the band – who shot to fame with Brass in Pocket in 1980 – will entertain the crowd in the stadium bowl on Tuesday, July 10 before the raspy-voiced Scot takes to the stage.

The rock band will support Rod throughout his UK tour after gaining a legion of fans with their album Pretenders being voted among the best of all time by VH1 and the Rolling Stone magazine.

The Pretenders count I’ll Stand By You, Stop Your Sobbing and Back on the Chain Gang as among their main hits.

Daniel Gidney, chief executive of the Ricoh Arena, said The Pretenders would be an ideal support act to another great rocker.

“The Pretenders and Rod Stewart have been a major part of the rock scene nationally and internationally for decades,” he said.

“We are delighted to be welcoming The Pretenders to the Ricoh Arena and I am sure they will attract fans from throughout the country to the Midlands.

“The Pretenders are still famous for their third single Brass in Pocket which was No. 1 in the UK as well as No. 14 in the United States which is a feat that not many bands achieve.

“Bon Jovi and the Red Hot Chili Peppers were both extremely popular concerts last year and I am sure The Pretenders and Rod Stewart will again excite the crowds and leave lasting memories.

“Watching these kind of top musicians live is completely different to seeing their performances on television and we are confident of providing another night to remember at the Ricoh.”

Daniel added: “We have recently invested £250,000 in further staging and seating for indoor concerts because we are determined to bring more international musicians to the Ricoh.

“We are developing a reputation as a great venue because of our fantastic facilities and the high calibre of acts that have already performed here. Add in the fact that the Ricoh is accessible to three-quarters of the population within a two-hour drive and it is a winning combination.”

Tickets for the concert, priced at £65, are available by ringing 0870 400 0688 or logging on to www.LiveNation.co.uk.
