Engelbert Humperdinck Announces 40th Anniversary Tour

Tickets to see the legendary singer, Engelbert Humperdinck, at Birmingham Hippodrome, go on sale this Friday 25 May 2007.

The iconic performer has defined romance for countless generations and this year he celebrates a milestone with the 40th anniversary of his first international breakout hit "Release Me."  The song has become the singer's signature track and was responsible for keeping The Beatles "Strawberry Fields" from the top spot in 1967!

In the late 60’s and early 70’s, Engelbert set the standard for Las Vegas-style glamour, with his extravagant and lavish stage shows, signature sideburns, swanky wardrobe and rich octave range, he was a bigger than life heart throb who drove female fans wild. He also performed alongside fellow musical legends of the time including his personal friend Elvis Presley (who stole his sideburns) and Dusty Springfield.

Engelbert is still popular with today's performers, ex Pulp front man and singer, Jarvis Cocker, picked the Humperdinck track “Ten Guitars” for the well-known BBC Radio 4 show, Desert Island Disc's.  Whilst comedian, Eddie Izzard, has an entire section about Engelbert as part of his stand up routine, where he speculates on other possible stage names. In 2004 Humperdinck also appeared in one of the nation’s best-loved television commercials, for John Smiths Bitter, dueting with the popular comic, Peter Kay.

The ultrasmooth balladeer has generated sales in excess of 130 million records, including 64 gold albums and 24 platinum, four Grammy nominations, a Golden Globe and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He has performed for the Queen and royal heads of state around the world which started his global career, including America, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, China, Russia, India and countries in South East Asia including Japan, as well as Spanish speaking countries. Earlier this year he received his Doctorate of Music from the University of Leicester.

Engelbert said, “I don't like to give people what they have already seen. I take the job description of 'entertainer' very seriously! I try to bring a sparkle that people don't expect and I get the biggest kick from hearing someone say 'I had no idea you could do that!”
