Tamasha's sell-out production of A Fine Balance, based on Rohinton Mistry's Booker shortlisted novel opens at Birmingham Repertory Theatre from Tuesday 15 to Saturday 19 May.
India, 1975, a State of Emergency has been declared. In an unidentified city by the sea, Dina Dalal, a spirited Parsi widow takes a boarder and two Hindu tailors into her ramshackle flat, determined to retain financial independence and to avoid a second marriage.
As the Government's Emergency programme of slum clearances and mass sterilisations upturns the lives of ordinary people throughout the country, the unlikely four find themselves crossing the divides of caste, class and religion to form the most unexpected of friendships. Yet they cannot remain untouched by the horrors of the emergency, which ultimately force each character to find their own fine balance between hope and despair.
In this tender and powerful production, Tamasha reveals an astonishing period in India's recent history whilst capturing the exceptional human spirit of its people.
