All hands to the pump at Coventry Transport Museum

Coventry Transport Museum is lending a helping hand to a new exhibition taking place at Broadfield House Glass Museum in Kingswinford.

‘Petrol-Heads: Glass Petrol Globes and Motoring Memorabilia’ will feature a petrol pump, oil cans, car mascots, toy cars and advertising, packaging and images from the1930s to the 1960s. The glass petrol globe, mounted on top of a petrol pump, was a common sight in garages up and down the country from the 1930s to the 1960s.  As pumps were modernised, most globes were destroyed so those that survived are now eagerly sought after by collectors.

Lizzie Hazlehurst, Curator of Archive and Information at Coventry Transport Museum said:

“We have over a million items in our Archive and we were really pleased to be able to help the Glass Museum add context to their exhibition of glass petrol globes.”

Kari Moodie, Glass Interpretation Officer at the Glass Museum said:

“Glass does not immediately spring to mind when it comes to motoring and petrol companies, but these globes are really striking and make a beautiful display. We are extremely grateful to all of the lenders who have made this exhibition possible.”

The items from the Transport Museum’s archive collection will set the scene for the exhibition which takes place at Broadfield House until 1st November.
