The Roar of the Dragon Returns
On the 26th April Birmingham city centre will be awash with white and red as the City celebrates the Patron Saint of England – St George.
This year’s family friendly activities, organised by Birmingham City Council and Birmingham St George’s Day Association, include a “Snappy” dragon slide which breathes “fire” on those who wish to tussle with it. With a medieval theme the day will include travelling story tellers will be roving around the square and illustrating their great tales with puppet shows. A medieval moneyer (money maker) and instrument maker will be on hand to demonstrate these ancient techniques and children can have a go at making their own.
In Chamberlain Square there will be traditional entertainment with folk and morris dancing. Over in Victoria Square, on the stage there will be performances from the City of Birmingham Brass Band, The Fab Beatles tribute act and Folk performers Show of Hands.
Lord Mayor, Councillor Randal Brew comments,
“ This is Birmingham’s opportunity to celebrate all things English with a day centring on the English Patron Saint. I would encourage everyone from all communities to join in the free fun on the 26th April.”
In Symphony Hall, the Celebrating England concert will start at 6pm. Tickets are still available for this great musical entertainment which brings together the pomp and circumstance of all things English, with performers such as Sovereign Brass and various male voice choirs.
Professor Carl Chinn, from the Birmingham St George’s Day Association said,
“I am proud that Birmingham is one of the few City’s in England that is putting on a celebration of all things English. The Symphony Hall concert will be a great end to a fabulous day of traditional activities.”
For those who fancy trying some traditional wines there will be a wine tasting area with a selection of English tipples. Sessions are free but must be prebooked via collette.fallon@birmingham.gov.uk. Over 18s only.
The celebration starts on 26th April at 12pm in Victoria and Chamberlain Square and runs until 5pm.
