Royal opening for city’s much-loved landmark

St George’s flags and bunting will be flying high in the city this month when The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall come to Birmingham to officially re-open the Town Hall.

Their Royal Highnesses will be visiting Birmingham on Tuesday, 22nd April when they will re-open one of the city's most impressive landmarks, following the completion of its £35m renovation last year.

Hundreds of school children, visitors and dignitaries are expected to gather in Victoria Square to welcome the couple when they arrive. They will then see the splendour of Town Hall for themselves as they, and a selected audience, are entertained by a range of city-based arts organisations.

Two hundred talented students from Elmhurst School for Dance, based in Edgbaston, will be taking part in a mixed dance programme which will include classical ballet, jazz, tap and musical theatre. Also performing will be with Ex Cathedra Choir and city organist Thomas Trotter.

The Duchess, who is Elmhurst's patron, will then go on to a luncheon organised by the charity.

The Town Hall was reopened to the public last October following a two-year conservation and restoration programme funded by Birmingham City Council, the Heritage Lottery Fund and European Regional Development Fund.

Since then, the City Council’s building has been run alongside Symphony Hall by Performances Birmingham Ltd and together the two venues present an exciting range of 600 concerts and events every year for the people of Birmingham and the region.

The Lord Mayor of Birmingham, Cllr Randal Brew, who will be welcoming the couple on behalf of the city, said: "The Lady Mayoress and I are delighted that this magnificent city landmark will receive a royal re-opening. It promises to be a momentous occasion for Birmingham and I am sure it will be a day to remember for our citizens, visitors and school children who come into the city to give a warm welcome the royal couple."
