Outer space meets Public Space at BBC Birmingham

Get set for take off and take a trip to the moon, visit distant planets and do a bit of star-gazing, all with the help of BBC Birmingham’s Public Space as part of the celebrations to mark the 50th anniversary of the BBC’s out of this world astronomy programme - The Sky at Night.

A galaxy of fun is on offer for visitors who moonwalk their way to BBC Birmingham’s Public Space at The Mailbox to mark the milestone of 50 years of broadcasting for the BBC Birmingham produced Sky at Night programme.

First stop on this interstellar journey is on Monday 23rd April, when space cadets can observe a spectacular display of images from 50 years of The Sky at Night and its superstar presenter - Sir Patrick Moore. There is also a special planet-spotting quiz for younger visitors to embark on.

Then on Saturday 28th April and Sunday 6th May a 'pop-up planetarium' filling Level Seven of the BBC Birmingham Public Space is touching down. Inside you can gaze on a brief history of the programme followed by an exciting and educational trip into the far reaches of space. Each voyage lasts around 20 Earth minutes; so intrepid space explorers should sign up on the day and arrive early to avoid disappointment.

The final frontier blasts off on Sunday 29th April and Saturday 5th May, when the University of Birmingham Physics and Astronomy department are running rocket building workshops as well as showing sky-maps allowing you to boldly go where no BBC Birmingham Public Space visitor has gone before and explore the night sky - during the middle of the day and from indoors!

In addition, all the usual BBC Birmingham Public Space attractions and amenities are available including the BBC Shop, a café, viewing screens through to the radio studios and BBC Midlands Today gallery and touch screen computers with access to information on BBC programmes, jobs and careers.

All visitors can have a go at being Nick Owen or Suzanne Virdee for the day by having a go at reading the news and weather on a special green screen – then sending it to the internet to be able to view it again later

The BBC Birmingham Public Space is open weekdays from 9.30am – 6pm, Saturdays from 9.30am – 5.30pm and Sundays from 11am – 5pm.
