Presenter For The Day With BBC WM

Important newsflash…budding young newshounds can seize the chance to show off their radio news reporting skills and try their luck as a BBC WM news presenter, between 11am and 4pm on 12th April with BBC Birmingham!

Following on from the huge success of the BBC News School Report, young visitors to BBC Birmingham’s Public Space can read a special news story for radio and at the end of their presenting debut, get to take a copy of their efforts home with them. Be warned though, it is not as easy as it looks!

BBC reporters have to decide what makes a good story, gather the information, write the piece with a punchy headline and once all that work is done - broadcast it! Hard work and determination is what journalists require if they are to get their story heard.

BBC News School Report involved young people between the ages of 12 and 13 years, based in 100 schools from around the country, making the news for BBC TV, Radio and Online with the help of BBC journalists. St John Wall School in Birmingham filmed a community meeting, interviewed 13-time World Darts Champion Phil Taylor and England women's footballer Michelle Hickmott.

A display showing the work created throughout the project is on display in the BBC Public Space during the school holidays at Easter. BBC School Report will be back in 2008.

The event runs from 11am to 4pm on Thursday 12th April 2007 in the BBC Public Space at The Mailbox. No appointment is necessary as would-be news readers are recorded on a first come, first served basis.

Les Ross, BBC WM presenter, says: “This is a fantastic opportunity for members of the public to visit BBC Birmingham at The Mailbox and get the opportunity to record their own news bulletin. Who knows, we may even find the next generation of BBC WM news readers!”

Also situated in the BBC Birmingham Public Space are interactive areas where visitors can create their own BBC Midlands Today bulletin and step into Shefali’s shoes for the day to present a weather report.

The BBC Birmingham Public Space is open weekdays from 9.30am – 6pm, Saturdays from 9.30am – 5.30pm and Sundays from 11am – 5pm.
