Also starring Ferruccio Furlanetto as Fiesco, the plot of Simon Boccanegra weaves a thread of inconsolable sadness through a disloyal world of self-interest, conflict and ambition. An opera noted for its tender duets, especially between Boccanegra and his long-lost daughter, Amelia.

The Threepenny Opera (Die Dreigroschenoper) (PG)
Thurs 23 Sept, 7pm
Set in a shadowy, stylised and dreamlike Victorian London, the story of Mackie 'The Knife' Messer and Polly Peachum is timeless, and the combination of playwright Bertolt Brecht's biting social satire and composer Kurt Weill's compelling music is as fresh as ever. In contrast to Brecht and Weill's musical play - an entertainment 'for beggars, by beggars', with minimal staging and props - Pabst and his designer created the biggest and most elaborate studio set that had ever been built in Germany. Brecht and Weill jointly sued Pabst’s production company for his treatment of their opera – an entertainment ‘for beggars, by beggars’ rather than a lavish and lyrical movie – but the play’s satirical bite is intact.
Dir: G.W. Pabst, Germany-USA, 1931, 1hr 53mins
Cast: Lotte Lenya, Rudolf Forster
Tickets cost: £5.50 full / £4.20 conc.
