Big Visit from the Big Apple

On Thursday 12 February 2009, Thinktank, Birmingham Science Museum will be welcoming four colleagues from the New York Hall of Science. These American visitors will be at the museum for five days to meet staff and discover how the recruitment initiative Science & Heritage Career Ladder, developed in New York is now benefiting Thinktank.

The group visiting from the New York Hall of Science includes Andrea Motto, Head of the Museum Youth Programme, Jennifer Correa who manages the science centre gallery staff, along with Michael and Justin who are part of the Science Career Ladder programme. Catherine Price, HR Manager at Thinktank comments: ‘We are thrilled to welcome Andrea and the team here to Thinktank. It’s a great chance for all of our staff members to meet our contemporaries from across the pond, and see what we can learn from the success of their Science Career Ladder.”

This special visit is part of a staff exchange agreement. In April 2009, two of the young people currently involved in Thinktank’s Science and Heritage Career Ladder programme will in turn, visit New York Hall of Science for five days with two senior Thinktank members of staff.

In 2007, Thinktank was selected as the UK’s only science centre to work with the New York Hall of Science on a Science & Heritage Career Ladder a programme to encourage local young people to adopt careers in science, and within the museums world. The principle for the Science & Heritage Career Ladder is simple; to encourage local young people to take up careers in science and learning by providing them with entry level part time work and training opportunities at the museum. The programme is proving a great success and has resulted in four local young people now working in permanent part-time roles within Thinktank.
