Deaf Cultural Centre brings Creative Hands together for Arts Fest

A Group of professional Deaf Artists are working with the Deaf Cultural Centre n preparation for the first Deaf Arts Festival in the Midlands.‘Creative Hands’, the inspiring title of the festival, will bring a 20 strong group of Deaf Artists together to map out activities for a week long festival that aims to show the importance of the arts and creative processes within Deaf culture.

The festival will take place from the 7th – 12th April 2008. Lisa Davies, Multimedia Productions Officer, who is overseeing the Deaf Cultural Centre’s involvement in the project said; “The festival is a celebration of Deaf art and the rich culture that has shaped and developed the artist’s perspectives, mediums and work.   We want this to be a real cultural exploration and reflection; that is why the artists themselves will lead the project.”

Although the festival is still at the planning stage a diverse range of activities will be taking place including art, dance and music workshops that will be led by local organisations and Deaf professionals.  In addition to this there will be an exhibition of Deaf Artists’ work that will take place throughout the week with private viewings for art enthusiasts in the evenings.  There will also be a closing party with dance performances, drama and music.

This is just one of many pioneering events that will take place over the next year and Lisa is hoping the Deaf Cultural Centre’s involvement will help to emphasise the importance of Deaf art to new audiences:

“Creative Hands is all about bringing Deaf art to a much wider audience that it is had before.  It is something that everyone, Deaf or Hearing, can become involved in.  This is a festival for art lovers that will give them a chance to discover new creative process and perspectives.”
