Business as usual as BIA welcomes a thousand extra passengers

Wet and windy weather may have been wreaking havoc up and down the country, but at Birmingham International Airport (BIA) it was business as usual with the Airport even receiving diverted aircraft from London Heathrow and Manchester due to high winds. The Airport team welcomed over a thousand extra passengers this morning as a result of diversions

Among the re-routed planes to land at BIA were jumbo jets destined to the capital from Hong Kong and Johannesburg.

At present BIA is unable to serve these destinations with heavy departing departing aircraft because of runway length - but with a planning application submitted to Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council for an extension to the runway , these and many more long-haul flights could become a regular sight in the very near future.

BIA's Head of Corporate Affairs, John Morris, said:-

"The most difficult part of people's outbound journey today will be getting here on the roads. Please take a little more time as the conditions have been quite unpleasant.

"The BIA team has really pulled together this morning, and as well as welcoming diverted passengers, we've even got a few flights away a little earlier than scheduled".
