India Dance Wales: Natya Kala - The Art of Dance

As part of sampad's dance rich spring season we present India Dance Wales with their new production Natya Kala - The Art of Dance, choreographed by Kiran Ratna. The performance, which has been inspired by the company's past collaborative work with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, takes place at mac on Thursday 29 March at 8pm.

Natya Kala explores the harmonisation of two different art forms: classical Indian dance and Western music through seeking points of correspondence via melody, rhythm and movement. In the process these diverse cultural forms are brought together in synthesis. The atmospheric musical score, composed by Peter Stacey, features a Western music ensemble playing traditional Indian music and patterns of Ragas, complemented by the voice of mezzo soprano Philippa Reeves.

Natya Kala explores characters from Monteverdi's opera Orpheus, based on Greek Mythology, and the renowned Indian epic Mahabharata. The performance displays the qualities of Nritta (abstract dance movements) and Abhinaya (portrayal of feelings and emotions), which both excite and energise and reach out for the hearts and minds of the audience. In Natya Kala the authentic knowledge of Bharatanatyam is applied in innovative ways to develop contemporary ideas, making the dance style exciting for the familiar and accessible to the unfamiliar.

India Dance Wales has been enchanting audiences with the art of classical Indian dance since 1983. It creates interest in dance through its regular classes, community outreach projects and demonstrations.
