BIA Embarks on a Treemendous New Initiative

Birmingham International Airport has embarked on a new tree-planting initiative to help mitigate its environmental impact on its surroundings.

In support of the ‘Birmingham Trees for Life’ campaign, founded by Birmingham Civic Society and City Council, the Airport has funded the planting of 40 established trees and many more smaller trees in The Radleys Park, Sheldon.

Elms Farm Primary School, Sheldon, had a lesson in why trees are important for the environment while getting their hands dirty helping Birmingham International Airport’s Community and Environment team plant the trees.

Jack Wilson, Head of Community and Environment at Birmingham International Airport, said “The Airport has agreed, in principal, to operate a carbon dioxide offsetting scheme and has identified tree-planting as one of the ways to do this. We are very conscious of the impact we have on the environment and our local community and this is just one way we can give something back.”

Councillor Sue Anderson, from the Sheldon Ward, said “It is vitally important that we get young people connected with their environment, and this project is a great way of doing that. We hope that by getting the children involved in the planting of trees they will treasure them forever. We are delighted the Airport works alongside its local community and gives something back to the environment.”
