New Initiative Dance Under Construction at The Drum
The Drum in partnership with The Association of Dance of the African Diaspora (ADAD) presents:
Dance Under Construction: Tap Lyrical Journey & Untitled
Dance Under Construction is a new and exciting arts development dance initiative set up by The Drum and ADAD (The Association of Dance of the African Diaspora) to encourage, nurture, support and develop new dance productions by Black dancers/choreographers. Each event will feature two exhilarating dance performances that will really get the creative juices flowing.
The first performance on Thu 19 Feb at 7.30pm is Tap Lyrical Journey, choreographed and performed by Imani Jendai. Imani is a Manchester-based tap dance artist. She is the founder of FE Dance UK, a community based youth dance group. In 2007/8 Imani was an ADAD Trailblazer and used the award to do research and development towards Tap Lyrical Journey, an autobiographical solo, which tells the story of her experiences as a Black British woman of Caribbean descent. This show is set to be a foot tapping original African dance at its finest, and one not to be missed. The second performance of the night is Untitled by Keisha Grant. The piece is an exploration of Keisha’s idiosyncratic movement style, based in Contemporary and African Dance.
Thu 19 Mar sees two more enthralling pieces taking to The Drum stage, the first of these is Buskin Boy choreographed and performed by Sean Graham. This hip hop dance theatre piece looks at a young boy’s struggle through, identity crisis and the transition to manhood in the absence of a farther figure. The second performance of the night is HALO, this biographical solo piece created and performed by De-Napoli Clarke of RJC Dance. The piece reviews the pain and torment endured by a dancer whilst immobilised from his neck to his head by a halo traction screwed into his skull.
The final Dance Under Construction piece of this season is The Journey and Children’s Choreography on Thu 30 Apr. Choreographed and performed by Adesola Akinleye from Dance Company, Children’s Choreography is an interactive piece which explores the few moments just after a child wakes – a place, between sleep and dreams as the world gradually comes into focus.
The second performance of the night is The Journey, drawing on house dance and contemporary dance the piece is a study of rhythm choreographed by Vicki Igokwe.
