Oh My Cod! Brummie Takeaway is First to Scoop Top Marks for Fish and Chips
A Birmingham takeaway set up by two friends from Stourbridge's Haybridge Sixth Form has become the first in the Midlands to scoop top marks for its fish and chips!
The Great British Eatery (GBE), based at the city’s premiere leisure and entertainment venue Broadway Plaza, has been awarded five stars in the Seafish Fryers Quality awards, following an intense three-hour audit last month.
The award means the takeaway, which specialises in quality British dishes, will be listed as a best quality fish and chip shop in national guides and on the website of Seafish, which is the authority on seafood.
Partners Conrad Brunton and Andrew Insley said they were frying high after hearing the news.
“We’re absolutely delighted. It is a massive achievement for us to gain top marks and be a five star shop after six months of trading. The audit was very detailed and we worked very hard to exceed the requirements across the board.”
Mike Pili, a veteran of the fish and chip trade and training co-ordinator for the Midlands Sea Fish Industry Group Training Association was part of the inspection team.
He said he was very impressed by what he saw and tasted at GBE: “All aspects of the business from delivery to service were of the highest standards.
“The Quality Award concentrates on thirteen areas of the shop including raw materials, storage, premises, handling practices, management controls and of course excellent food.
“I congratulate the GBE Partners for their attention to detail and the presentation of their fish and chips.”
The Great British Eatery was set up just last August by Conrad and Andrew after they identified a clear niche in the market.
Conrad recalled: “Fish and Chips is our national dish yet when we travelled around the city we couldn’t find any really good examples. Other cities we visited were lucky enough to have some really great modern chippies but Brum seemed a bit baron! We visited shops up and down the country and used our catering backgrounds to develop the concept. The Five stars is proof that all the hard work paid off!”
As well as fish and chips GBE specialises in British classics such as bangers and mash, roasted chicken with onion gravy, home made cottage pie and Cornish ice cream. GBE is also licensed, selling a great range of British beers and ciders.
Open to all fish and chip shops business in the UK, the award run by Seafish Friers Quality awards recognises exceptional standards of product, premises, food handling practices and customer service.
