Opportunity to Recycle!

Did you know that on average, every person throws away their own body weight in rubbish every 7 weeks?  Ever wondered what is happening to all this rubbish?

Opening on Thursday 8th February 2007, Recycle! is a new exhibition at Thinktank, Birmingham science museum that explores the surprising science behind domestic recycling.  Sponsored by SITA Trust and Novelis, this interactive exhibition focuses on the issues and science behind household waste, specifically compost, plastic and aluminium.  Visitors will learn how to identify and sort rubbish on the testing bench, find out what happens to rubbish when it is recycled and marvel at the unexpected objects that may be made from everyday domestic waste.

On 8th February, the Recycle! exhibition will be formally opened by Joanne Malin.  As well as presenting Central News, Joanne was nominated for an ITV News Award for an idea called The Big Clean Up where viewers, volunteers and ITV came together to clean up local communities.  The idea was taken up by all ITV broadcasters across Britain and led to more than 5 hours of air time on ITV1 covering a wide range of environmental issues.

Other speakers at this launch event include John Leaver, chairman of SITA Trust and Dr. Nick Winterbotham, chief executive of Thinktank and Millennium Point.

“Recycle! is an important new addition to the museum,” said Dr. Nick Winterbotham. “We hope the exhibition and accompanying activities will help educate and inspire our visitors about recycling, and think about the environmental impact of their own household rubbish.”

To support the exhibition opening, Thinktank is launching new workshops, science shows and even attempting a monstrous World Record!  Over the February half term holiday (10- 18 February) Thinktank is building the world’s largest plastic bag sculpture, taking the form of a 10 metre long, 3 metre high dinosaur.  Visitors to Thinktank are invited to help complete the challenge by bringing along their old plastic bags.  At the end of the week, the dinosaur will be made ‘extinct’, the bags taken away by British Polythene Industries PLC and recycled into a bench to be donated to a local school.

Guests at the launch event will include VIPs from local environmental organisations and government bodies, plus 30 school children from Bishop Loveday CE Primary School in Oxfordshire.  All of these guests will explore the new exhibition, meet a walking rubbish heap, tour the new science laboratory and see the new family science show.  In addition, there will be displays and demonstrations by environmental organisations including the RSPB and Waste Watch.
