Bags Needed for Jurassic Challenge

This half term holiday, treat your family to a day out at Thinktank and don’t forget those carrier bags!  From 10 - 18 February, Thinktank is attempting a monstrous World Record and needs YOUR help.

To celebrate the opening of Recycle!, a new exhibition exploring the surprising science of domestic recycling, Thinktank will be attempting to build the World’s largest plastic bag sculpture- a 3 metre high 10 metre long dinosaur.  Thousands of plastic bags are needed to create this ‘Recyclo-saurus’ and visitors are encouraged to bring as many as they can to help complete the challenge.

And that’s not the only thing happening at the museum this half term break.  Throughout the week, alongside the regular programme of demonstrations and workshops, there will be a ‘What a Load of Rubbish’ interactive family science show taking place in the Thinktank Theatre, ‘Dustin Tales’ being told by the resident story teller, and lots of other fun and fascinating recycling activities to entertain the whole family.

Sponsored by SITA Trust and Novelis, the new Recycle! exhibition focuses on the issues and science behind household waste, specifically compost, plastic and aluminium.  Visitors will learn how to identify and sort rubbish on the testing bench, find out what happens to rubbish when it is recycled and marvel at the unexpected objects that may be made from everyday domestic waste.

“Recycle! is an important new addition to the museum,” said Dr. Nick Winterbotham, chief executive of Thinktank and Millennium Point. “We hope the exhibition and accompanying activities will help educate and inspire our visitors about recycling, and think about the environmental impact of their own household rubbish.”

At the end of the week, the Recyclo-saurus will be made ‘extinct’, the bags taken away by British Polythene Industries PLC, and recycled into a bench to be donated to a local school.

From 10 - 18 February, a visit Thinktank and the new Recycle! exhibition, a show at the digital Planetarium PLUS one of the exciting films at the IMAX Cinema, including Superman Returns 3D (12A) and Open Season 3D (PG) costs just £14.55 for adults and £10.85 for children, or £45.00 for a family of 4.
