Fall in Love with Digital on Valentine’s Day
Love Birmingham, Love Digital. That’s the message from Birmingham City Council this Valentine’s Day.
Digital Birmingham, a partnership between Birmingham City Council, commercial organisations such as BT and local voluntary groups, is celebrating its first anniversary with an interactive showcase in Victoria Square on Wednesday 14 February.
Visitors will be able to have a go at using the internet, blogging and podcasting, using interactive digital television and gaming.
Digital Birmingham is helping Birmingham citizens and businesses benefit from digital technologies with its mission to become the leading European Digital City by 2010.
This free event is aimed at encouraging people living in and visiting Birmingham to learn about digital technology and how they can use it in their day-to-day lives.
Deputy Leader of Birmingham City Council Councillor Paul Tilsley will be surfing the digital waves in the ‘Get Digital’ tent, which will be divided into three zones covering money, leisure and time.
Councillor Tilsley said: “I hope Birmingham people will be inspired by the many exciting digital projects happening across the city that will transform us into becoming a leading Digital City. The developments are starting to make a real difference to how people will be able to access local services and information, anytime, any place, using digital TV, the new wireless City Centre network and the computers in the community project.
“Digital technology can have a huge impact on people’s lives. The aim of this event is to let the people of Birmingham know what is available to them and to reassure them that it is safe and accessible.”
Visitors can find out more about free public resources available through the library services such as email and internet, how to access local services through interactive digital television and free community websites.
Digital Birmingham is an alliance of public, commercial, community and voluntary organisations with the common goal of bringing the benefits of global technology to the people of Birmingham.
The day will run from 10am to 4pm and is suitable for all ages and experience. Visitors will be able to find out where they are on the Digital Curve, an online activity which tells you whether you are a technology wizard, novice or somewhere in between. There will also be fun activities for children such as face painting and gaming.
