Endorsement Sought For Birmingham Digital Charter
Birmingham City Council’s Cabinet will be asked to endorse the City’s Digital Charter 2007 for Birmingham at its meeting on 26 February.
The Digital Birmingham initiative is a partnership between Birmingham City Council and other public, private and voluntary sector organisations, promoting the benefits of digital technology in people’s day-to-day lives, such as greater access to information on local services via the internet.
It was launched in February 2006 and celebrated its first anniversary on 14 February this year. Its mission is to establish Birmingham as a lead digital city in Europe by 2010 and the charter sets out standards to be reached to achieve this. The Council is working closely with groups such as Aston Pride and University of Central England (UCE) to encourage children to share computer learning with their families, along with working in partnership with BT to provide a wireless network throughout the city centre.
Deputy Council Leader Councillor Paul Tilsley said: “We want to encourage and support citizens, communities and businesses in Birmingham to use digital technologies more widely. As a city-wide cross sector partnership Digital Birmingham aims to transform Birmingham from an industrial city to become a leading digital city.”
Birmingham’s Digital Charter states that:
• Every resident has simple, safe and supported access to the benefits of the knowledge society taking into consideration their abilities, funding, culture and lifestyle
• Every learner can extend their skills and knowledge through e-learning opportunities, collaboration and accreditation
• Every visitor can communicate, be guided and manage their visit
• Every worker has opportunities to improve their employment readiness, productivity and prospects
• Every community can collaborate and express their views, benefit from local information and services and be safe and sustainable
• Every public organisation and voluntary group transforms its services and collaborates to maximise the prosperity and community benefits of a joined up infrastructure
• Every entrepreneur, business and corporate organisation generates opportunity and wealth, shares expertise and contributes to community wellbeing
