Birmingham City Council Announces Half Marathon for the City
Birmingham City Council is planning to stage a city centre half marathon on 7 September 2008 and today the Cabinet Member for Leisure, Sport and Culture, Councillor Ray Hassall, approved this event, paving the way for it to happen.
A route which involves the event starting at the Birmingham Alexander Stadium in Perry Barr, coming through the city centre and finishing in Centenary Square is currently being considered but will only be finalised after detailed consultation with key groups in the city.
The Birmingham Half Marathon will be officially launched in the New Year, with details on how to enter and information about junior and wheelchair races.
Councillor Ray Hassall, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Sport and Culture said:
“I feel very passionate about getting the people of this City fit and healthy so I am delighted to be able to announce this half marathon event for Birmingham enabling local people to take part in such a major event. This will be a superb event for the city and will help put Birmingham firmly back on the road running map.”
“We have great leisure facilities so my message for the New Year is to get to your local leisure centre to make sure you can either walk or run the half marathon for Birmingham. All levels of fitness are welcome.”
