Two Birmingham Companies Win Regional Medical Technology Awards

TWO Birmingham companies have won the region’s only medical technology awards.

The annual Medical and Healthcare Technology Awards, run by Medilink West Midlands and funded by Advantage West Midlands, are the only regional awards to recognise the work of these medical manufacturers.

Held annually, the awards attract applicants representing the entire medical supply chain who compete in five specific categories.  An independent panel of industry pundits judges the applicants based upon their “pitch” and success in the category.  Nearly 100 people attended the awards event earlier this month at Austin Court, to support the 2006 winners of MedilinkWM Medical Technology Awards.

“Manufacturers doing business within the medical and healthcare market work very hard to compete with companies in the USA, China and Europe, and their achievements are hardly recognised,” notes CEO Tony Davis. “Medilink West Midlands, with support from Advantage West Midlands, proactively works to raise these company’s profiles regionally, nationally and internationally. The awards event is just one component in this process.”

Over 1,300 companies within the West Midlands are doing business within the medical and healthcare sector, and nearly 650 of those are located within Birmingham.

Cabinet Member for Regeneration Councillor Ken Hardeman said: “Medical and healthcare technology is a fast-expanding sector with the potential to lead to major job creation, so we are doing our best to encourage and support local manufacturing  companies to diversify and exploit this new opportunity.  It is very gratifying to see two companies who have excelled gaining regional recognition.”

The awards were in the following categories:

Innovation Award  – ParAid Medical Systems (Birmingham)
Export Achievement Award – Warwick Sasco Ltd (Leamington Spa)
Business Start Up Award – Metrasens Ltd (Malvern)
Growth in Sector Award – Clamason Industries Ltd (Kingswinford)
Partnership with the NHS Award – Safe Surgery Systems Ltd (Birmingham)

All regional award winners will go on to compete nationally with the winners of regional awards in Yorkshire & Humberside, East Midlands, Northwest of England, East of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.  The National Medical Technology Awards 2006 will be awarded on the MedilinkWM stand at Medical Device Technology (MDT) tradeshow, 14 – and 15 February 2007 at the NEC.
