From 19 November 2009 the ultimate Christmas gift for music lovers could be just a bid away as The City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra - through eBay for Charity - auctions a number of musical experiences including the chance to conduct the Orchestra, following a master class with world renowned Andris Nelsons, or the chance to play in the string section of the CBSO.

This pioneering experience with the CBSO, will ensure that amateur and experienced musicians are able to be part of something truly memorable and rewarding. The auction proceeds will benefit CBSO Ignite, the Midlands Orchestra's charity arm, which reaches more that 53,000 individuals regardless of age and musical ability each year.

EBay Auction goers can bid for an hours master class with Andris, the CBSO's celebrated Music Director, to get an insight into what makes him one of the best conductors currently on the international stage. Following this, the winner will then have the chance to take to the podium and lead the musicians of the CBSO. Alternatively, for those that play the Violin, Viola, Cello and Double Bass, their experience will include a two-hour tutorial with a CBSO musician prior to playing with this majestic orchestra.

Stephen Maddock chief executive of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra said: "Christmas is a time when we often don't know what to get loved ones. These experiences open up a door of opportunity for budding musicians as well as giving them something to truly inspire them.

"As a charity ourselves, the CBSO through Ignite works with thousands of individuals through five talented and renowned choruses, a youth orchestra as well as education and outreach programs that inspire and really bring music to life. For us, this campaign is about making sure that more people get the opportunity to experience what it is like to be part of a musical family whilst ensuring that thousands of individuals whoever they are, through this fundraising effort, have the opportunity to be part of a musical journey for life."

The eBay 'so you think you can do better...?' experience is open to amateur and experienced musically minded individuals as long as they are over 18 and, for the strings experience, hold Grade 8 or above in their instrument of choice. Winners will not only have the experience of a lifetime when playing or conducting for the day, but also, be able to engage with some of the world's elite musicians at an exclusive dinner plus VIP tickets to sample a CBSO concert.
