The CBSO Brings the Big Country to Birmingham
Players from the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra are eagerly awaiting the return of flamboyant conductor Carl Davis who brings his Wild West show to Birmingham for the first time on Friday 20 November.
Fresh from sold out concert halls in London, Manchester and across the world, this high-energy concert will feature a gold rush of cowboy western music from TV shows and film. Along the way the concert will pay homage to some of the best loved characters from western movies that we all know and love; The Magnificent Seven, Shane, Billy the Kid and The Lone Ranger.

Carl Davis is a hugely popular conductor and prolific composer whose career spans 50 years. His composing achievements include feature films, television, silent films, ballets and musicals – including famous themes from Cranford, World at War and Pride and Prejudice. As a conductor, Carl is well known for his appealing conducting style, giving interesting introductions to each piece and often donning themed costumes on the podium.
Carl said: “I’m really looking forward to returning to the Wild West Midlands! I’m always so well received here in Birmingham and the CBSO are a terrific orchestra.
“I love to reach people with music that crosses the boundaries into popular culture and that appeals to a wide age-range and there really is no more exciting music to do this with than western themes,” he added.
CBSO trumpeter Jon Quirk said, “All the players get very excited about Carl’s concerts. We have such a challenging schedule of classical music that it’ll be really great to have fun playing some fantastic western tunes!”
