Birmingham Baulks at New Nights Out

City’s social life is ruined by “Hobby Horror”

From salsa to speed dating, casinos to kung-fu, the people of Birmingham are desperate to diversify in their spare time but four in ten are too terrified to try different hobbies or new nights out.

According to a new study of Birmingham inhabitants by the Gala Casino on Hill Street, over two thirds of the city feels that their social life is stuck in a rut.

This is why Gala Casinos is bringing the first ever casino-on-wheels, the Casino Magic Bus, to the city centre this weekend (13th – 15th November). Designed to bring free casino games to Birmingham, this cutting edge vehicle, with its tables, roulette wheel and the friendliest croupiers, promises to reduce Hobby Horror across the city.

Birmingham’s Hobby Horror Top 10:

The 10 pastimes Brummies want to try but are too afraid…

1.    Salsa or ballroom dancing
2.    Pole or burlesque dancing
3.    Martial arts
4.    Street dancing
5.    Boxing
6.    Gym
7.    Yoga or Pilates
8.    Speed-dating
9.    Roller-disco
10.   Casino games

According to the study, this anxiety all stems from a fear of looking silly, turning up in the wrong outfit or just not having the necessary skills. Birmingham’s ladies are by far the worst afflicted of the two sexes: 23% more ladies admit to feeling Hobby Horror than their male counterparts.

Gala Casinos' spokesperson and Birmingham resident Chris Maskill said: “For a city that prides itself on having a good time, the results of our study are really surprising. We all want to try new things but fret because some hobbies appear intimidating. Sampling these pastimes is key to losing that fear. Sometimes people can have the same misconceptions about our casino but all our customers will testify that there is nothing to be scared of. There are no Bond villains, no complicated games and no pretensions.”

“Obviously this is a time when people don’t want to be too extravagant with their spending, which really showed in our research. However, our brand new bus is completely free and our casino is not all about high rollers. Instead, we make it our mission to offer an easygoing, good value night out for everybody in Brum.”
