Totally Tchaikovsky

Tchaikovsky lovers will have the chance to hear a very personal interpretation from the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra’s new music director, Andris Nelsons as he pays homage to the great Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky in a concert on 26 November, 7.30 pm at Symphony Hall, Birmingham.  The Violin Concerto will be one of the highlights of the night, and the orchestra will be again joined by the brilliant young Latvian violinist Baiba Skride, who recorded the piece with the CBSO last year.  It was during those recording sessions that the players of the CBSO decided to offer the music director position to Andris Nelsons, so this line-up already holds a special place in his affections.

The programme spans a prosperous ten years in the great composer’s career, from the Violin Concerto, composed in 1878, to the Overture from Hamlet, written in 1888. It also features the dramatic Fifth Symphony, which perfectly reflects Tchaikovsky’s oscillating moods around that time. The three pieces should represent both the lighter side of Tchaikovsky’s art, as well as the more brooding nature of some works.
