Celebrate the Festive Season and the Launch of Mencap in the Midlands
Mencap will be holding its first ever Carols by Candlelight concert in the centre of Birmingham on 7 December 2006. The concert celebrates Mencap’s 60th year as the UK’s leading learning disability charity and the arrival of the new Midlands fundraising team to the area.
The special hour-long service will take place in the beautiful St Martin’s Church at the heart of the Bullring Shopping Centre. The service will include poetry readings, carols and musical performances.
The service will begin with a warm welcome by Clergy from St Martin’s Church. Poetry written by people with a learning disability will be read by Mencap service-users, a choir from Fox Hollies Special School will sing festive songs and there will be music by a steel band from Cardinal Wiseman Technology College and The Centenary Brass Quintet from Birmingham Conservatoire. The last performance of the evening will be by Melody Musicians who have a learning disability.
Guests are invited to visit the Bullring after the service as shops and restaurants are open until 10pm. Tickets are priced at just £5.00 each. Money raised will help improve the lives of over 200,000 children and adults with a learning disability in the East and West Midlands.
Charlotte Dooley, Head of Regional Fundraising, said: “This is a very exciting time for us as we are a new team to the Midlands. We have so much to be proud of at this exciting time in Mencap's 60th year and we want as many people to come along to the service to find out more about what Mencap does!”
