Core strategy for city development
CABINET on 27 November is being asked to approve a plan for the drawing-up of a “Core Strategy” for land use in Birmingham.
The production of a Core Strategy is required by the government as part of a new planning system being introduced nationally. The strategy will set out the City Council’s overall strategic approach to land use and development issues. It will also incorporate the objectives of other documents such as the Community Strategy and the Local Transport Plan, which makes it key to the development of the city and its communities.
The report to Cabinet asks for endorsement of the approach to preparing this key document, including commissioning experts to carry out the specialist studies which are required as part of the strategy.
Cabinet Member for Regeneration Councillor Ken Hardeman said, “The Core Strategy will be a pivotal document with a central role in taking forward the City’s Growth Agenda, continuing Birmingham’s regeneration and tackling new priorities such as climate change. It is important that we get it right first time so we are not open to challenges in the future.”
